1. What is Membrane keyboards?
Membrane keyboards are widely considered to be the best kind of keyboard currently available on the market today. Membrane keyboards work by alternately pressing down rubber domes that are located underneath every single key. Membrane based keyboards come in two types, flat and ergonomic . Ergonomic membrane keyboards like the Kinesis Advantage2 (shown below) assume a more diamond shaped button layout for its keys, which aims to reduce stress on your wrists.
Membrane technology turns what would otherwise be an ordinary remote control into a full fledged Membrane keyboard using it’s built in touchpad . Membrane Keyboards can also be used wirelessly when connected to a mobile device such as an iDevice or Android device. Membrane Keyboards are also much quieter than other types of keyboards like Mechanical Keyboards which makes them ideal for office settings that require quiet working environments . Membrane Keyswitches are also relatively cheap to make, making Membrane Keyboards some of the most inexpensive type of keyboards available on the market today.
2. Types Of Membrane Switches
There are two types of Membrane switches, Double-Tapping Membrane Switches and Single-Tapping Membrane Switches.
Double-Tapping Membrane switches have a single membrane that is responsible for both pressing down on the domes as well as sensing when the key has been double tapped . This type of switch is used by many laptops because it saves space. For example, Instead of having two separate membranes for each key, there only to be one membrane per every 3 – 4 keys.
3. How Membranes Work?
Membrane switches work by sensing when a certain amount of downward force has been applied to the keyboard or button that is being pressed . This downward force is what tells Membrane keyboards that you are trying to press a key down on the Membrane board underneath the key itself. When enough downwards force has been applied Membrane boards will activate and send a signal to your PC telling it which buttons have been pressed . The Membrane boards themselves are typically located in between each row of keys so that membrane presses can be registered from even the most extreme angles. Membranes, unlike most other types of switches, do not use any sort of electrical component at all.
Membrane Switches Membrane keyboards have a much lower profile than Mechanical Keyboards and the fact that Membranes do not use any metals makes Membranes keyboards some of the quietest keyboards available on the market today. Membranes are also amongst one of the cheapest type of switches to manufacture which makes Membrane Keyboards very inexpensive as well . Membrane technology is also perfect for those that require quiet working environments or work in public, like at an office or library since Membranes are whisper quiet. Also, because Membrane boards offer little resistance against your fingers it can be much easier to double tap keys without having to focus too intently on how hard you’re pressing down. Double-Tapping Keys (which Membranes are great for) can help increase your typing speed and accuracy by removing the need to fully press down on a key. Membranes work best with low travel distance (distance required to push down the key) and many Membrane keyboards feature ultra-low profiles which allow Membrane keyswitches to be as little as 4mm in height with some Membranes being as thin as 1mm!
The disadvantages of Membrane keyboards is that Membranes become less responsive over time and with use . This happens because the rubber under each key, or dome , wears out and loses its ability to return back to it’s original state after being pressed. Membrane boards all domes under each key at the same time which is why Membranes keyboards start to lose their responsiveness at the same speed. Membrane keyboards also do not feel as nice as mechanical keyboard because Membranes are typically flat (whereas most Mechanical Keyboards feature an ergonomic curve built into them). Membrane Keyboards can also be uncomfortable if you don’t like pressing keys down all the way since Membranes require more downward force than other switches . Additionally, Membranes are difficult to clean because there is no way (that we know of) to take apart a Membrane switch. Membranes are also very loud and some Membranes aren’t best suited for gaming since they’re so loud and unresponsive. For longer gaming sessions it is best to choose Membrane keyboards that are tactile ( Membranes with tactile feedback will provide you with some response when pressing down on Membranes ). Membranes typically have a very long actuation distance, which means you need to press Membrane keys way before the point of where you want your character to start moving in game.
– Less Responsive over time
– Lacks ergonomic curve for comfortability
– Longer actuation distance than other type of switches
